Habits of Effective People: How to teach your child to be successful
If you looked around you would probably find that there are certain habits of effective people that are consistent. For example, look at any successful person and it will be obvious that his ability to focus his attention without wandering is superior to others.
The ability to pay attention is a mental habit. Whereas moral habits can be formed through example and modeling, mental habits need direct teaching. Whatever the natural gifts and talents are of your child, he will never be able to make use of them without forming the habits of effective people.
So what are those habits?
Here is a quick list of the habits of effective people that every parent should try to instill in his child:
Strong mental habits: effective people have the ability to concentrate and pay attention that exceeds others.
Perservance: Effective people don't give up. They keep their goal in sight and keep going until they reach it.
Have a take charge attitude: Effective people take control of their lives. They achieve success by taking control of the things they can influence in their lives and by not focusing on things which they cannot control like the negative behavior of others.
Priotize : Effective people put important things first
Empathy: Effective people have the ablitity to listen to others and to see things from their perspectives. This allows others to put down their guard and in turn understand the person.
Balance: Effective people have a balance in their lives. They are not slaves to work and yet are not indulging at every given moment. They know when to work and when it is time for physical, social and emotional renewal.
Now that you have a list of the habits of effective people, you should start to train your child to form these habits. It is not enough to merely model the habit yourself, you must expose your child to situations that will help him to form the desired habit.
So if you want your child to get in the habit of paying attention you should directly teach your child to focus on only one task for a given amount of time. He should not be allowed to wander his contentration away from this task for any reason. With time you will start to see this training become a habit.
