Habit Formation: How Your Child's Habits Develop
We all wish we could change the bad habits and behavior that we see in our children. Have you ever stopped to think about how those habits were developed to begin with? Before you try to change the undesirable behavior of your child, you should first find out what causes habit formation. Then armed with this information you can start to make the desirable changes in his behavior.
Habit formation can basically be broken down into three areas:
Primary desires- All human beings are born with innate desires that are universal regardless of religion, culture, ethnicity or upbringing. For example, if you observe an infant from an aristorcarte family and one from a savage tribe you will see the same desires of social acceptance through their happy smiles and their desire for knowledge through their exploring eyes and wandering crawling.
Genetics- Another part of your child's habit formation comes from his genetics. Is your child stubborn like his grandfather or shy like you? Is your child an aspiring artisit like his father or a natural writer like his grandmother?
Phyiscal conditions- Finally your child's physical conditions play the last role in his habit formation. A small, unhealthy child differs in his desires and emotions to his stronger healthier peer. A child brought up in a calm, happy home atmosphere will have different habits from a child bought up in a chaotic , depressing one.
So basically, your child's habit formation is a combination of nature, genetics and physical conditions.
So now that you know how habit formation takes place in your child it is obvious that the factor that you have the most control over is your child's physical conditions. This is where you should start searching to find the source of your child's bad habit and change it.
